It?s no secret that American diners talk a good game about healthier eating choices. While many are quite serious about it, many more really want yummy comfort food. ?Soup and salad? sounds pretty innocuous from a dietary standpoint. This is especially so when the customer summons a mental picture of some healthful broth-based vegetarian soup. And of course salad is the classic diet food.
No doubt about it, soup and salad restaurant franchises do offer healthy options. Most have low-fat or vegetarian options, and some go further with gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and similar dietary offerings. However, these same restaurants probably have a rich, tasty, and definitely not dietetic lobster bisque, loaded potato, or chicken pot pie soup on the menu as well.
The same goes for salads. Yes, the vegetables in salad are healthy, and even many of the meats that get added are low-fat protein sources.
