Franchise Your Business to Scale - what drives effective franchise marketing systems and why do some businesses scale so well through franchise development?  Before I entered the franchise industry, I was like most consumers who was just pleasantly surprised when I saw a brand I recognized pop up in a new market.  I didn't put a lot of thought into HOW they opened so many new locations in new markets or what the obstacles to achieving this type of growth might be, but it was fun to see it happen and surprising to realize that a brand might have 100's of locations in a short time period.  When I started working as a franchise consultant, the strategic planning and consultation time spent with business owners, it became evident to me how incredible the franchise model could be.  

Franchise Marketing Systems is a full service franchise development and consulting firm who works with business owners to transition into franchising.  Our work and value proposition is designed to support early stage franchisors who have a vision for growth, a strong business model and the aptitude to scale their business.  A significant part of my day is spent working business owners to evaluate franchising as a business model and whether the vehicle is a possibility for their brand.  The discussions start somewhat like this, 'Mr. Conner, I have a successful pizza business located in Los Angeles, California I'm thinking about franchising.  Chris, o you think it could be successful as a franchise brand?'  During these consultations, I make sure that the discussion is presented in a way that isn't aggressive, demeaning or potentially insulting, but we need to understand whether you are just a good operator, or if you really have a good potential franchise system.  What kind of technology are you using in your day to day business?  What is your track record in sales and profitability, what is the initial investment to replicate your model in a new market?  For this particular business owner, I would ask more about how they compare to other pizza chains in California, whether they have unique selling points and if they have a proven marketing system we could transition to franchisees.  All of these aspects will be important as to whether this California pizza shop owner has what it takes to launch a franchise model.  

The reality is that in almost 20 years of doing franchise development work with Franchise Marketing Systems, it is still difficult to pick which brands will be highly successful and which will have moderate success.  What I have found is that if you check off a list to verify that a business has what is integral to a successful franchise system, you can avoid the colossal failures in franchise development.  Much like our California Pizza shop business, if you have the right ingredients and recipe, you can create an incredible franchise product.
