Products & Services
Surface Specialists was created by Wayne McClosky in 1980 and franchising began in 1982. When Wayne retired in 1996, he considered 2 existing franchisees to take over as the franchisor. Dan Kaplan was chosen for his strength in the organization and proven ability to run a successful home franchise. At this time however, his youth was heavily weighted against him so it was determined that John & Irene Lucas would become the next franchisors; with the stipulation that when they retired, Dan would succeed them. Several new franchisees and services were added to the Surface Specialists system before their retirement in 2002 when Dan became the current franchisor.
Prior to joining Surface Specialists as a franchisee in 1989, Dan already had substantial history and experience within the home improvement industry. At only 22, he oversaw 22 crews for a remodeling company in the New York area. After marrying his wife, Miranda, they relocated to North Carolina where Dan began building houses. Looking for something new, he went to work for a national kitchen and bath cabinet company where he quickly became the district manager. During this time, he had a chip in his tub that needed to be repaired. The company that came out to perform the work was there about 30 minutes and charged him $125.
This interesting process, especially for this fee, always stuck with him. Then in 1989, his father in-law decided he wanted to financially support one of his children to open their own business. When all of his children passed, Dan was given the opportunity. He immediately took him up on the offer and began searching for the perfect business. Remembering that chip repair, he went looking for a repair and refinishing company and through his research and speaking with Wayne, determined Surface Specialists was the best franchise.
Dan & Miranda owned and operated the Surface Specialists franchise in Charlotte, NC through April of 2005, when they sold it to concentrate solely on developing the franchise system. They built the largest franchise to date and achieved sales of over $1,000,000 for each of the final five years they owned it. It is Dan’s vast expertise and knowledge of how to run a successful franchise that we are ready and able to pass onto all of our franchises.

Training & Support
Surface Specialists Systems, Inc. will provide you with a 15 day intense training program for our kitchen and bath restoration franchise at our world headquarters in Matthews, NC (a suburb of Charlotte). In addition to teaching you technical procedures, the training program and manuals are structured to provide you with all necessary skills for operating your home based business including; QuickBooks instruction, selling and marketing our services, equipment review, employee training, forms and business procedures, cost control and other matters.
From the first day, you will experience on-the-job training, learning techniques essential to becoming an expert in the field. In addition, you will be provided with our confidential manuals, classroom training and instructional videotapes. You may not open your Surface Specialists kitchen and bath franchise unless you successfully complete the initial training program.
Ongoing support is one of the best advantages that franchising has to offer over independent businesses. Not only will you have 24/7 access directly to the franchisor, you have the entire network of Surface Specialists franchises to count on for technical support. Any problem that you might experience, we have probably seen and can help you resolve quickly.

Are You a Good Fit for Surface Specialists?
There are two fees associated with becoming a Surface Specialists repair and refinishing franchise. The first of these is a one-time franchise fee which is required by any franchise for sale. Our relatively cheap franchise fee of $21,000 covers the costs associated with providing the following for your bathroom and kitchen franchise:
A portion of this fee also supports the cost to develop and organize the franchise and related systems, our expenses in connection with selecting franchisees, the support provided prior to opening and compliance with various laws.
- 15 days of comprehensive training; including round trip transportation and lodging
- All the tools and equipment necessary to perform the services for all our profit centers
- Product and materials to generate over $10,000 worth of sales
- Our confidential Field Manual, Office Manual, Tubliner Manual and MSDS sheets
- A printing and marketing package including business cards, letterhead, envelopes, invoices, work orders, warranty flyers, promotional brochures and personalized marketing materials
- Administrative, management, marketing and sales training
